When to Vote

Mark your calendars!

Anyone aged 18 or over on the election day or who got married before this age can vote if they are Hungarian citizens or hold the citizenship of another EU country.

Do I have an obligation to Vote?

No, there is no legal obligation. However, you know what we say…use your vote anyway!

Where can I vote?

If you are a Hungarian citizen voting in Hungary

If you live in Hungary, you can vote at the polling station close to your place of residence. You can also find it in the letter sent by the authorities. And guess what?! You don’t have to register, the authorities will do it for you.

However, if you do not have a legal residence in Hungary or you wish to vote at a different polling station, you haveto register. You have multiple ways to register: in person, by proxy, by mail or online. Learn more here.

Deadline to register: 15 May 2024, by 16:00.

If you are a Hungarian citizen voting from another EU country

Do you live abroad, but you have an official address in Hungary?  To vote, you need to register at the Hungarian embassy or consulate in the country where you live. You can do it online, by using a specific platform, in person or by proxy.

Deadline to register: 31 May 2024, by 16:00.

If you are a Hungarian citizen voting from a country outside the EU

The same rules of registration apply when voting outside the European Union. If you do not have an address in Hungary, then you have to register in person or by proxy in the Hungarian embassies or consulates, online on this platform or by mail.

Deadline to register: 15 May 2024, by 16:00.

If you are EU citizen voting in Hungary

As a legal resident in Hungary, you can of course vote there! Make sure to register either in person, by proxy at any elections office, or online here, to be on the voting list. 

Deadline to register: 24 May 2024, by 16:00.

NO ✖ Unfortunately you cannot vote online in Hungary.

Can I vote by mail?
YES ✓ You can vote by mail but only if you are a Hungarian citizen without a residence in Hungary.

Can I vote by proxy?
NO ✖ Unfortunately you cannot vote by proxy in Hungary.

Voting & accessibility

Do you have a disability or an illness? If you cannot go to the polling station, there are forms of assistance available:

  • you can request accessible information (including the official notification) to be sent to you about the elections
  • voting templates are available for those in need of it
  • you can request a mobile polling station at your residence
  • polling stations should be accessible or you can request to use one

fun facts

  • Hungary joined the European Union on 1 May 2004.
  • Hungary will have 21 members of the European Parliament the same as in the previous elections in 2019.
  • There is only one national constituency and everyone votes for the same list across the country.
  • Hungary has closed lists, voters cannot alter the party list.
  • The threshold for the European elections is at least 5% of the votes.
  • The colours red, white, and green on the national flag represent the country’s core values.
