Anyone aged 17 or over in the year of the elections can vote if they are Greek citizens or hold the citizenship of another EU country, with legal residence in Greece.

Do I have an obligation to Vote?

Yes, there is a legal obligation to vote, except if you are over 70 or you are abroad.

If you are a Greek citizen voting in Greece

If you live in Greece, check your official home address, because you have to vote at the polling station close to your residence. And guess what?! You don’t have to register, the authorities will do it for you. You can find more details here.

Greece has recently introduced the possibility to vote by mail. To do so, you must register online on this platform. Once you register, the authorities will send you the postal ballot and it has to reach their office back by June 8.

Deadline to register for postal voting: 29 April 2024.

If you are a Greek citizen voting from another EU country

Do you live abroad? Greece will not set up any polling stations abroad. Therefore, you need to register and voteby mail. To register, you have to use this platform.

If you are an Greek citizen voting from a country outside the EU

If you are EU citizen voting in Greece

As a legal resident in Greece, you can of course vote there! Keep in mind that you cannot vote anymore in your country of origin if you choose to vote here. To vote, you have to register in the municipality where you have your official residence, to be on the voting list. You only have to go to the municipality’s office with your ID and fill out a form. Voting & accessibility

Do you have a disability or an illness? If you cannot go to the polling station, there are forms of assistance available:

  • you can choose to vote by mail if you cannot go to the polling station
  • you can bring a companion dog inside the polling station
  • the polling station's president of the electoral commission has to accommodate any needs you may have when voting

fun facts

  • Greece joined the European Union on 1 January 1981.
  • Greece will have 21 members of the European Parliament the same as in the previous elections in 2019.
  • If you are an EU citizen living in Greece and you already registered for the 2019 European Elections, you don't have to register again this year, you are already on the voting list.
  • There is only one national constituency and everyone votes for the same list across the country.
  • Greece uses cross-preferential voting, this means that voters can choose up to four specific candidates.
  • The threshold for the European elections is at least 3% of the votes.
  • Greece has more than 2,000 islands, of which approximately 170 are populated.
