When to Vote

Mark your calendars!

Anyone aged 18 or over on the election day can vote if they have residency in Lithuania and hold either Lithuanian citizenship or the citizenship of another EU country.

Do I have an obligation to Vote?

No, there is no legal obligation to vote. But you know what we say…use your vote anyway!

If you are a Lithuanian citizen voting in Lithuania

If you live in Lithuania, check your official home address, because you should vote at the polling station close to where you live. However, during the election day, you can also vote at any other polling station nationwide. You can also vote in advance, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

And guess what?! You don’t have to register, the authorities will do it for you. In case you recently changed your address, check the authorities’ website to make sure you are on the voting list.

If you are a Lithuanian citizen voting from another EU country

Do you live abroad or are you travelling during the election day?  You can cast your vote in person at the Lithuanian embassy or consulate in that country or by mail. To vote, you need to register. You can even do it online, by using a specific platform. Here you can also check the candidates, where to vote and other useful information.

Please keep in mind that you have to register even if you were on the voters’ list for the previous elections in foreign states. If you choose to vote by mail, then you have to send your ballot to the consulate or embassy of Lithuania before the election day. Check more information here.

Deadline to register: the deadline varies from country to country; you can find them all on this page. Make sure to register as soon as possible, especially if you plan to vote by mail.

If you are an Lithuanian citizen voting from a country outside the EU

The same rules from aboveapply when voting outside the European Union. 

If you are EU citizen voting in Lithuania

As a legal resident in Lithuania, you can of course vote there! The same rules apply to Lithuanian citizens. Make sure to register on the online platform to show your intention to vote in Lithuania. You can find more information here.
