Anyone aged 18 or over on the election day can vote if they have residency in Luxembourg and hold either Luxembourgish citizenship or the citizenship of another EU country.

Do I have an obligation to Vote?

Yes, there is a legal obligation to vote, if you are a citizen of 18 years old and up to 75 years old, registered on the voters’ list.

If you are a Luxembourgish citizen voting in Luxembourg

If you live in Luxembourg, you can vote at the polling station assigned to your commune. Check the notification received from authorities, because it mentions the address of the polling station. And guess what?! You don’t have to register, the authorities will do it for you and send you a notification letter to remind you to vote. However, if you plan to vote by mail, then make sure to register in advance. You can do it in person at the commune where you live or online, on this platform.

Deadline to register (voting by mail): the earliest 12 weeks and at the latest 25 days before election day

If you are a Luxembourgish citizen voting from another EU country

Do you live abroad? To vote, you need to request it in advance. All you have to do is fill in a form and send it either online (on this platform) or by mail. Afterwards, you can send your voting ballot by mail to the commune where you are registered for voting. You can learn more here.

Deadline to register: you have to register between 12 weeks and 40 days before the vote, to receive a notification letter from autorities

If you are an Luxembourgish citizen voting from a country outside the EU

The same rules of registration apply when voting outside the European Union. 

If you are EU citizen voting in Luxembourg

As a legal resident in Luxembourg, you can of course vote there! However, you have to register in advance to be on the voting list and receive a notification from authorities. You can register either in person at the commune where you live or by using the online platform.

Deadline to register: no later than the 55th day preceding the elections.
